White Diamond Buying Guide

Your Complete Guide to Choosing the Perfect Lab Grown Diamond

We believe that finding the perfect diamond should feel effortless and informed. Whether you are selecting an engagement ring or a timeless piece of fine jewelry, understanding how diamonds are evaluated gives you the confidence to make the right choice. This guide walks you through everything you need to know about lab grown diamonds — from the 4Cs to practical buying tips — so you can choose a stone that matches your style, your values, and your budget.

1. Lab Grown Diamonds: Real Diamonds, Thoughtfully Created

Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds. They share the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as natural diamonds — both are made of pure carbon crystallized in a diamond structure. The difference lies in their origin: natural diamonds form deep within the Earth over billions of years, while lab grown diamonds are created in controlled laboratory environments using advanced technology that replicates the same growing conditions.

Even trained gemologists cannot distinguish a lab grown diamond from a natural one with the naked eye. Lab grown diamonds display the same brilliance, fire, and scintillation, because they share the same optical performance. They are also graded using the same standards — the 4Cs — by independent gemological laboratories.

Choosing a lab grown diamond means you can prioritize size, quality, and design without the environmental and ethical concerns associated with traditional mining. It is a modern choice that does not compromise on beauty or meaning.

2. The 4Cs of Diamond Quality

The 4Cs — Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight — form the universal framework for evaluating every diamond. They were developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and are now used worldwide as the standard for diamond assessment. Understanding how these four factors interact is the key to choosing a diamond that looks beautiful and fits your budget.

Cut: The Most Important C

Cut is the most critical of the 4Cs. It determines how well a diamond interacts with light — how brightly it sparkles and how much brilliance it returns to the eye, regardless of its size or color grade. A well-cut diamond will appear more luminous and lively than a poorly cut diamond of larger carat weight.

Cut grades range from Excellent to Poor. When evaluating cut, look at three aspects:
- Brightness: the internal and external white light reflected from the diamond
- Fire: the scattering of white light into all the colors of the rainbow
- Scintillation: the sparkle and flashes of light you see when the diamond moves

LUCERARO recommendation: Prioritize cut above all else. A diamond with an Excellent cut will look stunning even if it has slightly lower color or clarity grades. A 1-carat diamond with a superior cut can look bigger and brighter than a poorly cut 1.5-carat diamond.

Color: The Subtle Difference

Color measures how colorless a diamond appears. The GIA color scale ranges from D (completely colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Colorless diamonds are the most rare and valuable, while diamonds closer to the D end of the scale allow more light to pass through cleanly, creating greater brilliance.

The color difference between adjacent grades is extremely subtle and often invisible to the naked eye, especially once the diamond is set in a ring. A diamond graded F or G will look perfectly white in a ring setting, without the premium cost of a colorless D–F stone.

LUCERARO recommendation: For most buyers, F–G color offers excellent value — the diamond appears white and bright to the eye, and the savings can be put toward a larger carat weight or a higher cut grade.

Clarity: Nature’s Fingerprint

Clarity refers to the presence of internal inclusions and surface blemishes. The GIA clarity scale ranges from Flawless (FL) — no inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification — to Included (I3), where inclusions are visible to the naked eye.

Most diamonds contain some inclusions, but they are often microscopic and do not affect the diamond’s beauty. The key is to choose a diamond that is “eye-clean” — meaning no inclusions are visible to the unaided eye.

LUCERARO recommendation: VS1–VS2 clarity offers a balance of quality and value without compromising visual beauty. SI1 can also be an excellent choice if the inclusions are not visible face-up. Avoid diamonds with visible inclusions that affect the sparkle.

Carat: A Matter of Presence

Carat measures the weight of a diamond. One carat equals 0.2 grams. Larger diamonds are rarer and therefore more valuable, but carat weight alone does not determine how large a diamond appears — cut proportions and shape also play a role.

Two diamonds of the same carat weight can look very different in size depending on how they are cut. A well-proportioned diamond with a shallow depth may face up larger than a deeper-cut diamond of the same weight.

LUCERARO recommendation: When choosing carat weight, consider how the diamond will look in its setting and on the hand. Just-under-threshold weights — such as 0.90ct instead of 1.00ct, or 1.90ct instead of 2.00ct — can offer significant savings with virtually no visible difference in size.

3. Balancing the 4Cs: How to Prioritize

The 4Cs do not exist in isolation — they work together to define a diamond’s overall beauty and value. When budget requires trade-offs, here is how to think about your priorities:

Cut first. Cut has the greatest impact on how a diamond looks. A well-cut diamond will outperform a larger, poorly cut stone every time. Do not compromise on cut.

Color and clarity next. Choose grades that look beautiful to the eye. F–G color and VS–SI clarity deliver excellent visual appeal without paying for grades you cannot see.

Carat last. Once you have established a cut, color, and clarity range that looks great, choose the largest carat weight that fits your budget within those parameters.

Lab grown advantage: Because lab grown diamonds cost significantly less than natural diamonds of comparable quality, you can often afford a larger or higher-quality stone within the same budget. Many of our customers find they can prioritize both size and quality.

4. Beyond the 4Cs: What Else Matters

Certification

Every LUCERARO diamond comes with an independent grading report from a recognized gemological laboratory. This report documents the diamond’s 4Cs grades, along with additional details about its proportions, polish, symmetry, and any fluorescence. A grading report is your assurance of quality and your guide for comparison.

Polish and Symmetry

Polish refers to the smoothness of the diamond’s facets, while symmetry describes how precisely they are aligned. Both are graded from Excellent to Poor. Diamonds with Excellent polish and symmetry reflect light more efficiently, enhancing overall brilliance. Look for Excellent (EX) or Very Good (VG) grades in both categories.

Fluorescence

Fluorescence is the glow some diamonds emit under ultraviolet light. In most cases, faint or medium fluorescence has no visible effect on a diamond’s appearance. Strong fluorescence can sometimes make a diamond appear cloudy, particularly in higher color grades. For diamonds in the near-colorless range (G–J), faint or no fluorescence is generally the safest choice.

Shape

Diamond shape refers to the outline of the stone — round, oval, emerald, pear, and so on. Shape is a matter of personal style, but it also affects light performance and price. **Round brilliant** diamonds are the most popular because their cut is optimized for maximum brilliance. Fancy shapes — oval, cushion, princess, emerald, and others — offer distinctive character and can appear larger per carat weight than round diamonds.

5. Choosing Your Setting

The setting is the frame that holds your diamond, and it plays a significant role in the overall look of your ring. Popular styles include:

- Solitaire: A single diamond held by minimal metal — timeless, elegant, and focuses all attention on the stone.
- Halo: A ring of smaller diamonds surrounding the center stone — enhances perceived size and adds extra sparkle.
- Pavé: Small diamonds set along the band — adds continuous shimmer and a luxurious feel.
- Three-stone: A center diamond flanked by two side stones — symbolic of past, present, and future.

Consider the metal as well: platinum and white gold complement colorless diamonds, while yellow gold and rose gold add warmth and contrast.

6. Your LUCERARO Buying Checklist

Before you make your selection, run through these key points:

- Cut: Choose Excellent or Very Good. This is the single most important factor.
- Color: F–G is the sweet spot for most buyers — white appearance, great value.
- Clarity: VS1–VS2 or eye-clean SI1 — no visible inclusions.
- Carat: Choose the largest size your budget allows after setting cut, color, and clarity.
- Certification: Ensure your diamond comes with a grading report from a recognized laboratory.
- Polish & Symmetry: Excellent or Very Good.
- Shape: Choose what you love — round for classic brilliance, fancy shapes for distinctive character.
- Setting: Select a style that complements the diamond and your personal taste.

A note on the fifth C — Confidence. The most important factor is your confidence in your choice. A diamond that speaks to you, that feels right, that you are excited to wear every day — that is the right diamond for you.

7. Caring for Your Diamond

Lab grown diamonds are exceptionally durable — they rank 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, the hardest known natural material. With proper care, your diamond will maintain its brilliance for a lifetime.

- Clean regularly with a soft brush and mild soap in warm water, or use a professional ultrasonic cleaner.
- Store separately in a soft pouch or jewelry box to prevent scratches from other jewelry.
- Avoid harsh chemicals such as chlorine and bleach, which can damage the metal setting over time.
- Inspect the setting periodically to ensure the diamond is secure. LUCERARO offers complimentary inspections and cleaning.
